Top spring fashion trends for 2012

TORONTO – With much of Canada revelling in an early heat wave, our focus shifts from the fall/winter runway collections to light and bright spring fashion trends.

Global Fashion takes a look at the top spring fashion trends for 2012.

Oranges and tangerines

Tangerine Tango – a “spirited reddish-orange” – was named by the Pantone Color Institute as 2012’s would-be top colour, and the spring shows proved the prediction was spot on. Orange was featured heavily on numerous international runways and has since trickled down to main street department stores in a variety of hues.

How to wear it: In you are feeling bold opt for a flirty summer dress in the vibrant colour. Or you could dip your toes in with tangerine nail polish or accessories.

Pastels

From peppermint to soft pink, baby blue to lemon yellow, pastels are big for spring. Nothing is off-limits for this flirty trend, as shoes to nail polish and everything in between are showing up in cupcake-coloured hues.

How to wear it: Don’t get too sweet, layer pastel pieces with neutral basics. If you’re opting for a cotton-candy pink blazer, pair it with neutral slacks and blouse.

Neon

There was a time where my favourite colour was unapologetically ‘neon’ – and that time is making a comeback. But this time around, rather than being paired with high top sneakers and Surf Style jackets (just picture it! An icon in the making…) neon is showing up on runways in sophisticated silhouettes.

How to wear it: To be clear, the trend is still not for the faint of heart, and while neon-on-neon may be an eye-catching look on the runway, a regular woman needs some serious confidence to pull it off. Look for a colour-blocking dress with neon and neutrals, or opt for the 100-watt accessories.

Bold prints

Spring runways were dotted with tribal, earthy and futuristic prints, from head-to-toe. Look for floral, tribal and animal prints this spring to give your wardrobe an instance lift.

How to wear it: While the head-to-toe look can be stunning on the runway, it can easily slip into the ridiculous in the boardroom. Save the really bold prints for a night out with the girls (they will appreciate the effort more than your man-friend will).

Peplum skirts

Does this skirt make my hips look big? Why yes, yes it does. But that’s the point. The peplum skirt made another triumphant return to the runway for spring 2012.

How to wear it: If you’re going to wear a peplum, then just go for it. You can ease into the trend by starting out with a peplumed blazer, but really the trend is all about the dramatic silhouette – so why water it down? Just leave your banana clips at home for the love of god.
