3 vying to become the next FSIN chief

SASKATOON – Three people are in the running to become the next chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations. Nomination closed Monday for those looking to lead the organization that represents 74 First Nations in the province.

The three running are Helen Ben from the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, current vice-chief Bobby Cameron from Witchekan Lake First Nation and Leo Omani from Wahpeton Dakota First Nation.

Current interim chief Kimberly Jonathan elected not to run for the position, but let her name stand for first vice-chief.

Dutch Lerat was the only candidate for the position of third vice-chief.

Jonathan and Lerat will remain in their current positions until they are formally acclaimed during the FSIN’s fall legislative assembly being held in Saskatoon Oct. 28-29.

A byelection will also be held during the assembly to elect a second vice-chief. Nominations for the position close at noon local time on Oct. 5.
