Top 5: Hollywood movie flops

TORONTO – Breaking records is a good thing – but not when it’s for being the biggest movie flop of all time.

Disney’s latest movie, John Carter, about war veteran who is transplanted to Mars, shatters losses logged in previous film flops. Disney admitted on Monday that it expects to book a loss of $200 million on the movie in the quarter through March. That ranks it among Hollywood’s all-time biggest money-losers.

Here’s a list of some other movies with similar tragic fates:

1. John Carter – Disney said “John Carter” has brought in about $184 million in ticket sales worldwide so far. But ticket sales are split roughly in half with theatre owners. The movie’s production budget is estimated to be about $250 million with about $100 million more spent on marketing.

2. Mars Need Moms – Disney’s eerily real computer animated movie “Mars Needs Moms” from 2011 set film makers back about $150 million but it only sold $40 million in tickets worldwide, according to Hollywood.com.

3. Speed Racer – 2008’s Warner Bros.’ action flick cost about $120 million, but took in only about $94 million in theatres.

4. Ishtar – Columbia Pictures’ movie cost about $40 million to make in 1987, but sold only $14 million in tickets domestically.

5. The Postman – Kevin Costner’s post-Apocalyptic movie cost $80m to make but took just over $17 million worldwide.
