TORONTO – A female dance instructor is facing sexual assault charges following an incident involving a 12-year-old girl between September 2007 and 2008.
Police allege the victim was a student at the now-closed Vince Parrell Dance Studio at 276 Main St. near Danforth Avenue when the accused befriended her and allegedly sexually assaulted her.
Cheryl Thompson, 34, of Mississauga has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and sexual exploitation.
Toronto Police Const. David Hopkinson said the case was not a “standard” sexual assault investigation, adding that parents should always be careful with who they leave their kids with.
“We’re putting it out because we believe that there may be other young girls that might have gotten into a relationship with this woman or there might have been a sexual assault,” Hopkinson said.
“We’re talking about a person who has not only the access to the children but the trust of the parents, so to find out that the allegation is she sexually assaulted one of them, then we have concerns that this may have happened with others.”
Police said the accused worked as a freelance dance instructor between September 2007 and 2008 who had owned her own studio called “Studio 22” in Woodbridge.
Authorities said she continues to work as a freelance dance instructor today.
Thompson is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 5.
Police believe there may be more victims and anyone with information is urged to come forward.
