Minister Sigurdson meets with Lethbridge stakeholders

Lori Sigurdson meets with Lethbridge community steak holders at the Enmax Centre.

LETHBRIDGE- Alberta’s Minister of Innovation and Advanced Education and Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour visited Lethbridge Friday, meeting with stakeholders and community leaders.

Lori Sigurdson did not announce any new programs.  Instead, she held a general question-and-answer session with members of the media.  With the price of oil continuing to hover around $45 per barrel, Sigurdson was asked what the government’s plan is for assisting displaced oilfield workers in finding new jobs, and whether there is any specific training offered to those looking to switch career paths?

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We are very concerned when workers lose there jobs and we want to make sure that they have other opportunities and that’s why it’s so important to diversify our economy,” said Sigurdson. “And, so, coming up this fall we’re going to be announcing a jobs plan that will really help workers get into the labour force from a more diversified perspective. Also too, investing in infrastructure so that we are creating more opportunities for workers to get jobs, so absolutely it’s something we are working on right now.”
