WINNIPEG — The first day of the new hockey season is in the books but much of the talk on day one of Winnipeg Jets training camp centred around next season.

Jets captain Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien are both unrestricted free agents at the end of the season but both say they’d like to get new deals done to remain in Winnipeg.

For Ladd his focus will remain on hockey while his agent and General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff try and hammer out a new deal.

“I’m sure both sides were hoping to have something done by now,” Ladd said. “My agent obviously keeps me informed of what’s going on and how the process is going but I think it’s easier to put it on the back burner now that we’re getting going and you can just focus on going to the rink everyday.”

Byfuglien is in the final year of his contract that will pay him six-million dollars in the 2015-16 season.  And was asked if he wanted to stay here.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Ya, I mean we got beautiful lakes and stuff around here and everything’s great,” Byfuglien said.  “I just come to work. I have people to take care of that and they’re talking.”
