TORONTO — Undergraduate students in Canada paid an average of $6,191 in tuition fees for the 2015/2016 academic year, a 3.2 per cent increase from the 2014/2015 average of $5,998.
The annual Stats Canada comparison of tuition fees across the provinces found that students in Ontario are paying the highest fees on average, at $7,868. Saskatchewan tuition fees came second at $6,885, and in third place Nova Scotia at $6,817.
Paying the least in tuition fees are students in Newfoundland and Labrador with an average of $2,660, and Quebec at $2,799.
Alberta froze tuition fees for the academic years, while tuition has been frozen in Newfoundland and Labrador since the 2003/2004 academic year. New Brunswick froze tuition for most programs, resulting in a modest increase of 0.9 per cent overall. Other increases by province ranged between 1.9 per cent in Manitoba to 5.2 per cent in Nova Scotia.

Dentistry students paid the highest average tuition fees of all undergrad students, coming in at a total of $18,934 in tuition fees, on average. Next came students in medicine at $13,416, pharmacy at $11,723 and law at $10,983 on average.
Graduate students
Tuition fees for graduate students followed the same patterns as undergrad fees: Ontario students paid the most, at $8,971, followed by students in Nova Scotia at $8,502 on average.

Again, students in Newfoundland and Labrador paid the least on average for graduate studies at$2,474, and in Quebec $2,886.

Among graduate students, executive master of business administration remained the most expensive program with average tuition fees at $42,235, followed by the regular MBA with average fees of $28,567.
Dentistry took a relatively distant third place with $12,551 in average tuition fees in the 2015/2016 year.
International students
Students from outside of Canada continue to pay much higher fees for their studies. International students paid an average of $21,932 in the 2015/2016 year, a 6.5 per cent increase from the year before.
Tuition fees for graduate programs increased by 3.2 per cent for international students, who paid $14,350 on average for the 2015/2016 school year.
