MONTREAL – After 35 years of worldwide recognition, renowned Montreal dance company La La La Human Steps has announced it is closing its doors for good.
Founder and Artistic Director Édouard Lock said the decision was made due to financial troubles.
“The mandate of an arts organization is to make art, it’s not to survive,” he explained.
Lock pointed out it takes a lot of work to transform a concept into a dance piece, go through all the rehearsals, contractual negotiations and more.
“Past a certain point you cannot save a creation and assume that it can continue to have a proper relationship with the theatres and the presenters,” he said.
It’s something La La La Human Steps just couldn’t keep up with any more.
Lock admitted the decision was made with a heavy heart.
“You don’t want to let go of something you’ve taken 43 years to build, but at the same time you’ve got to stay connected to your principles,” he said.
“The legacy of this company is going to survive in the memory, the living memory of those people that came to see it.”
