CALGARY – While Environment Canada ended its poor air quality statement for the city of Calgary Monday afternoon, Alberta Health Services’ advisory remained in effect.
An AHS spokesperson said the organization is waiting for an updated forecast Tuesday morning, as there was potential for a “plume” of smoke to impact Calgary again mid-week.
She said the medical officer of health thought it prudent to keep the advisory in effect Monday until he can analyze the potential health risk associated with the updated forecast. AHS issues and lifts advisories based on medical officers’ risk assessments using the Air Quality Health Index and forecasting provided to them by Alberta Health and Alberta Environment and Parks.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Environment Canada said both organizations were working in coordination.
“We see the plume and we have put out a forecast based on that. But it’s not strong enough to effect a special air quality statement,” said the Environment Canada spokesperson.
AHS said it would issue a rescind advisory to indicate when its advisory was no longer in effect.
Air quality in Calgary continues to be a concern for residents after smoke from western wildfires drifted into southern Alberta over the past week.
