Vermont State Police said Randy Babcock was clearing his .22 caliber handgun Sunday morning when his daughter was shot in the stomach at a campsite in a wooded area off U.S. Route 4 in Ira, Vt.

Family members carried McKenzie Ezzo to a rest area, where they were met by emergency personnel, police say. She was first taken to the Rutland Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to the University of Vermont Medical Center.

The girl underwent surgery and is currently in the intensive care unit.

The Vermont State Police Troop C Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the state department for Children and Families are investigating.
