DIEPPE, N.B. – A 15-year-old baker from Dieppe has whipped up a little business for herself as more than a summer job.

Dominique Gould’s business making celebration cakes started when she was just 12 years old.

“I have always loved to be in the kitchen and I think it mostly started in fifth grade when me and my friend made a cake for our fifth grade class,” she said. “I think I like the decorating part of it most because I get to play with fondant and frosting.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

She draws on “some” experience from her childhood, says Gould’s mother Monique Duclos.

“Ever since she has been very young she has always like played with play-dough and paint and she has always been the artsy one,” she said.

Which is why she says Gould is able to turn out cakes that look like they were made by a seasoned baker.

“I like the feeling of saying, ‘I did this and I am proud of it and it looks good,'” said Gould.

She takes most of her orders through social media. This summer, Gould took on the responsibility of making her very first wedding cake.

“People have been ordering and pre-ordering two years ahead and I have a wedding cake for my cousin to do in November, a three-tiered wedding cake.”

Once she’s actually old enough to get a job, Dominique is hoping to work in a bakery so she can sharpen her skills.

She’s still not sure she wants to bake full-time as a career. But her mom says running her own business is teaching her all about managing her time and taking on big responsibilities.

But apparently, she does still has one important thing to work on: cleaning up.

“The floors are full of frosting and the cupboards, it’s just like a disaster.”
