CALGARY – Friends and family of Brandon Thomas, a Calgary teen that was killed by a drunk driver, are keeping his memory alive by honouring one of his favourite hobbies.
Over 750 vehicles were on display at a show and shine at Quarry Park Sunday.
The event is up over 600 vehicle’s from last year and raised over $16,000 for a scholarship in Brandon Thomas’ name.
Thomas had been looking forward to taking a mechanics program at SAIT and hoped to one day own his own shop.
The 17-year-old was killed when his vehicle collided with a pick-up traveling the wrong way on Highway 22 near Cochrane in December 2012.
Thomas’ mother says it still feels like yesterday but community support has brought the family a long way in their healing.
“The support has been amazing from the car family. I didn’t know what the big draw was with my son being part of the car community. I see it. It’s a big family. Everyone supports everybody,” Kim Thomas said.
24-year-old Ryan Gibson plead guilty to impaired driving following the 2012 crash.
He was sentenced to two years and eight months behind bars and was released on full parole last week after serving a fraction of his sentence.
