Regina lawyer may sue Ashley Madison; calls site ‘negligent’

REGINA – Canada’s class-action king is looking for plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Ashley Madison.

Regina lawyer Tony Merchant accuses the spouse-cheating dating site of negligence because confidential information got to the public when hackers dumped millions of alleged account details online.

“It’s all about society’s right to have privacy and that privacy is being breached,” he said.

Merchant compares the dump of more than 35 million users’ data to recent breaches at major companies like Home Depot.

He believes the outcry would be different if hackers had breached another web site, suggesting you look past the adulterous motives of Ashley Madison users.

“We don’t launch lawsuits based on what the Bible or the Quran says, we launch lawsuits based on breach of law, loss of rights,” Merchant said. “People (have been) taken advantage of by, in this case, a big business.”

As of Thursday, Merchant says no one had come forward to put their name to a case.
