Summary: Long-time Liberal MP John McCallum was first elected in this area in 2000, and prior to the election represented the riding of Markham-Unionville. With boundary redistribution, he is seeking a sixth term in this new riding. It could be a tight race, since voters were almost evenly split here in 2011 between the Liberals and Conservatives.
Boundaries: This riding covers the southwest portion of Markham. This area was previously represented by Markham-Unionville and Thornhill.
Last Election: If this riding existed in 2011, it would have been a tight race, with a Liberal win with 37.1 per cent of the vote, followed by the Conservatives with 36.4 per cent , a difference of just 272 votes.
History: McCallum won his former riding with no trouble until the 2011 election, which it was a comparative squeaker, a victory by 1,695 votes. He kept Markham-Unionville Liberal since its creation in 2004. The Thornhill riding was Liberal from 1997 until 2008, when it was won by Conservative Peter Kent.
Demographics: A suburban, multicultural riding, there is an average of 1.4 children per household, fifth highest in Ontario. 50.3 per cent of residents were born in Asia as of the 2011 census, third highest in the province, while 40.5 per cent of residents said they were not religious, the highest number in Ontario.
