Next Saskatchewan provincial election on April 4, 2016

REGINA – The date of the next provincial election has officially been moved. Elections Saskatchewan confirmed Thursday the 28th general election will take place on April 4, 2016.

It was originally scheduled to take place on Nov. 2, 2015 but had to be moved due to an overlap with the federal election taking place on Oct. 19.

Under The Legislative Assembly Act, the provincial election date moves to the first Monday in April of the following year in the event of an overlap between a federal and provincial election.

Michael Boda, Saskatchewan’s Chief Electoral Officer, said the next provincial election will be the largest ever held in the province.

“We anticipate serving over 800,000 eligible voters and employing 10,000 workers on election day,” said Boda.

There will be 61 constituencies in the next election, up from the current 58.

It will also be the first election since The Election Amendment Act came into effect, which modernizes the electoral process and increases accessibility for voters including the introduction of a permanent register of voters and implementation of homebound voting for disabled voters.
