Summary: Ryan Cleary’s victory here in 2011 gave the NDP both seats in the provincial capital. He is seeking re-election this year, but is likely to face a significant battle against the Liberal candidate, well-known former journalist Seamus O’Regan.
Boundaries: Boundary changes for 2015 mean this riding now includes the communities of Bay Bulls and Witless Bay.
Last Election: NDP candidate Ryan Cleary defeated Liberal incumbent Siobhan Coady by 19.4 per cent.
History: Cleary’s 2011 win was his second attempt at this seat. He was defeated by Coady in 2008 by just 949 votes. The Liberal win that year was credited to then-Premier Danny Williams’ “Anything But Conservative” campaign. The Conservatives won this seat in 2004 and 2006, both times represented by Loyola Hearn.
