Bride-to-be fighting to get her mom a visa to attend her wedding

Doaa and her mom Nabila. Submitted

Doaa Mohamed is getting married in eight days.

The Egyptian-born UBC student has been living in Vancouver for five years. Two years ago she met her fiance, Marco Pennino.

Mohamed has been looking forward to her mom, Nabila Ahmed, coming from Egypt to be at her wedding, but was shocked to find out her mother’s visa had been rejected. She started a petition with the hashtag #bringmymomtomywedding to get support to bring her mom to Canada.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“On July 11 we reapplied, but we haven’t heard any news yet,” says Mohamed.

“The reasons were that she doesn’t have sufficient funds and her ties in Canada are stronger than her ties in Egypt, which is not true because I clarified in the application that I just want her for the wedding and I provided all financial proof that she can afford herself and I can cover her stay here.”

Ahmed has visited Mohamed before and was given a six-month visa to stay in Canada. She left after about a month-and-a-half as she did not like the weather.

“She’s my only living parent,” says Mohamed. “I don’t have siblings, I’m not asking for much, just a basic human right just for my mom to be here.”

“If she can just have 24 hours for that day, I would be happy, I won’t say anything,” says Mohamed.
