MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Hay yields in Saskatchewan are well below the five-year average as more than 50 per cent has now been baled or put into silage. According to the weekly crop report, 40 per cent of the hay crop is rated as either fair or poor.

Portions of the province received much needed rain last week, which delayed haying in some areas, but helped alleviate moisture concerns in other regions.

Topsoil moisture is rated as 46 per cent short or very short with hay land and pasture topsoil moisture rated 63 per cent short or very short.

The province has set up a listing service to let producers advertise and source feed products.

On Thursday, the federal government announced they will grant tax deferrals to livestock producers in regions hit by drought.

Almost two-thirds of crops are at their normal stage of development for this time of year and are ripening quickly. The majority of the crop remains in poor-to-good condition.

Most crop damage in the past week was caused by a lack of moisture or insects.
