VICTORIA – Victoria police are releasing new information about the case of a toddler found dead in a hotel room.

The force has issued a statement saying police spoke with the child’s mother twice on Friday.

Police say the conversations took place after they received calls for service from citizens concerned about the woman’s behaviour, including loud praying inside a Victoria mosque.

Police were called to a hotel on Douglas Street around 4 a.m. Saturday for reports of a woman screaming.

Officers entered the room to find a distraught woman, a young child and a 19-month-old without vital signs, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The BC Coroners Service and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit are investigating the cause of the child’s death.
