Police lay charges in theft of jerseys worth over $20,000

CALGARY – Police have charged three people in connection with the theft of thousands of dollars worth of property from a home in Windsor Park.

Police were called to a home in the southwest community on Thursday July 9, after reports of a break and enter in a detached garage. When they arrived, officers found thieves had made off with a bike, three sets of golf clubs and about 30 rugby jerseys worth an estimated $20,250.

Some of the stolen property was later located by members of the public, while more was eventually recovered inside a home in the 1700 block of 35 Street S.E.

“At the end of the day we got everything back,” said owner and former professional rugby player Dave Lougheed at a Tuesday news conference. “Once you know it’s gone, you never expect to see it come back.”

Lougheed says it took years to collect all of the jerseys.

“For many years rugby was amateur, in ’95 it turned professional, but the currency early on was the fact that you’d play a game against the opponent, and at the end of the game you’d switch your jersey as a sign of respect. So instead of having 30 Canadian jerseys you had a nice array of memories.”

“Each of these jerseys comes with an individual story, an actual game that I’ve played in, maybe a player on the team that’s an international superstar.”

“To see all 30 of them back here, it’s amazing. And the support and everything from the community has been fantastic.”

Police have charged three people in connection to the thefts:

Brian Clow, 24, is facing a handful of charges, including break and enter to commit an offence, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of breach of a recognizance, one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and three counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 24.

Trisha Clow, 25, has been charged with break and enter to commit an offense, two counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000. She will next appear in court on July 30.
