A man is dead in Port Hardy after a police-involved shooting.
It happened late Wednesday morning in the middle of town, on Granville Street between Highway 19 and Thunderbird Way.
Witnesses have told Global News the victim had a knife on him at the time of the shooting.
Officers responded to a complaint of a man causing a disturbance. He was shot, but did not survive his injuries.
The Independent Investigations Office, which investigates all police-involved shootings in B.C., has sent a team of investigators to Port Hardy.
One subject officer from the Port Hardy RCMP has been designated to the investigation.
Two witness officers have also been designated and interviewed.
The scene examination is almost complete and significant physical evidence has been seized.
Today, IIO investigators will be focusing on interviewing civilian witnesses and reviewing any cell phone video.
The IIO believes additional witnesses may have been in the area where the two incidents took place, in particular, Bernie Road and Highway 1 near Canoe; and the intersection of Granville Street, just west of the 4-way stop intersection at the Island Highway in Port Hardy.
