Smoke from uncontrolled wildfire could be visible from the Okanagan

At least one person has already reported seeing smoke in the sky in Penticton. Rick Riddall

Residents of the south Okanagan should expect to see smoke in the sky. A wildfire is burning uncontrolled on both sides of the U.S. – Canada border near Newby Lake. It was caused by lightning and was first reported Thursday afternoon.

“Currently it is spreading very rapidly,” says fire information officer Melissa Klassen. “It’s burning in very very steep slopes so access is a problem.”

Klassen says no structures are immediately threatened by the fire.

“Currently given the issues of access, as well as the type of terrain and the intense fire behavior that is occurring on this fire we do not have any resources responding,” says Klassen. “We were assessing whether air tankers could respond.”

Around 2:15 p.m. Thursday the fire was estimated to be 30 hectares in size.
