Kelowna’s Canada Day festivities attract huge crowds

KELOWNA – Tens of thousands of people, many dressed for the occasion, celebrated the country’s 148th birthday in Kelowna Wednesday.

The Canada Day festivities included a wide array of activities, music and food.

That included a giant birthday cake and 3600 pounds of watermelon, both dished out for free.

A perennial crowd favourite is the folk-fest cultural shows on stage at Prospera Place.

Across the street at the Mary Irwin theatre, 44 people signed the Oath of Citizenship to officially become Canadian.

“We’ve been all over the world and we think Canada is the best place. We love Kelowna, we love Canada and we love the values we have in this country. We’re so proud and happy to be here today,” says Gurdeep Kahlan of him and his partner who are originally from the United Kingdom.

The festivities end in fiery fashion with the fireworks show at tugboat bay at 10:30 p.m.
