Open burning/campfire ban takes effect Friday in southern interior

Kamloops Fire Centre .

KAMLOOPS – A ban on all open fires in the Okanagan and other areas of the Kamloops Fire Centre takes effect Friday at noon.

The fire danger rating in the region is high with some pockets at extreme.

A government news release states: “In addition to campfires, this prohibition applies to open fires of any size, industrial burning, fireworks, tiki torches, sky lanterns and burning barrels. This prohibition does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, so long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.”

With the hot, dry weather, wildfires in the region have been aggressive requiring additional firefighting resources.

People violating the open burning prohibition could be issued a $345 ticket, hit with an administrative penalty of $10,000, or if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and jailed for up to one year.
