Two of the women killed in QEII collision near Ponoka identified

WATCH ABOVE: It’s been a weekend of tragedy on Alberta roads. A collision near Ponoka claimed three lives, and as Tracy Nagai explain, several others were seriously injured in a number of other crashes.

EDMONTON – The identities of two women killed in a central Alberta crash over the weekend have been released.

Mercedes Dizon and Monique Davey were two of three women who died in a two-vehicle collision on the QEII south of Ponoka Saturday afternoon.

Dizon and Davey both worked at Edmonton’s Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

According to Glenrose Hospital, the two women were long-time friends who worked together at the hospital for many years.

Dizon worked in the office of the Site Medical Director and Davey worked as a nursing professional practice manager where she helped with nursing education and advancing clinical practice.

“Both women shared a passion for the Glenrose and the patients and families. They were well liked and well known for their significant contributions at the Glenrose as well as the in broader healthcare community.  They will both be truly missed,” read a statement from the Glenrose Hospital.

The collision happened after a southbound truck crossed over the median on the divided highway and into the path of the SUV the women were in.

A woman inside the truck also died on scene, while a man inside the truck was taken to the Ponoka Hospital in stable condition.

The QEII was closed to traffic for several hours while police investigated and the scene was cleared.

RCMP from Ponoka and Blackfalds were dispatched to detour backed-up traffic, and a collision analyst was called to investigate. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
