Chestermere mourns death of 17-year-old in highway crash

WATCH: Friends and family are remembering the life of the 17 year old Jaydon Sommerfeld. Many are asking for changes to the specific intersection where the teen was killed so that no more lives are lost. Jayme Doll reports.

CALGARY – A 17-year-old teen has died after a three-vehicle crash in Chestermere on Tuesday afternoon.

Friends identified the teen as Jaydon Sommerfeld, a former athlete with “Push It Fitness” and student at Chestermere High School.

“As a mother of teenagers, I can’t imagine the pain and anguish these families must be going through,” said Chestermere Mayor Patricia Matthews in a statement on Wednesday.

Matthews said the city was advised that the young man had died.

“This is the worst news that any parent can get,” she said. “On behalf of Council and staff at the City, I extend our deepest sympathies to everyone involved, especially this boy’s family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this very difficult time.”

A memorial was set up in Sommerfeld’s memory at Chestermere High School:

The crash happened east of Calgary in the eastbound lanes of Highway 1 at Highway 791 at about 3:40 p.m. on Tuesday. A car heading northbound on Highway 791 stopped at a stop sign, then proceeded into the intersection. Another car, with Sommerfeld and a female teenager, was heading eastbound and hit the car in the intersection. Their car then slammed into another truck also heading eastbound on Highway 1.

Sommerfeld was extricated from the car, then airlifted to hospital by STARS air ambulance. The female teen was taken to Foothills hospital in serious but stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The woman in the car that was heading northbound on Highway 791 was taken to Peter Lougheed Centre in stable condition with minor injuries.

Mayor Matthews said Wednesday the city is “anxiously” awaiting the final implementation of an interchange at the Highway 791/Highway 1 location.

“We will continue to advocate to Alberta Transportation for improvements to this intersection so heartbreaking accidents like this one can be avoided in the future.”
