TORONTO — Only days after being cancelled by MTV in Canada, producers of the youth drama series Degrassi announced Tuesday it will debut next year on Family Channel in Canada and on Netflix worldwide.

Degrassi: Next Class will be available on the streaming service everywhere except in Canada, Australia and France.

“It was so hard for us not being able to say anything until all the agreements were finally signed and sealed last night,” executive producer Stephen Stohn tweeted early Tuesday.

According to a press release, Next Class “focuses on a group of teens as they begin their journey into adulthood. Pushing their own limits and testing the bonds of family and friends, the students each find their own way to deal with a range of issues: from homophobia, racism, substance abuse and violence to burgeoning sexuality, body issues, heartbreak and the complications of dating in the social media age.

“The series strives to entertain its post-millennial audience while always reinforcing its core principle: You are not alone.”

MTV in Canada announced last week it was pulling the plug on Degrassi after 14 years. The franchise has been on the air since 1980.

The series will continue to be filmed in Toronto.
