Girl, 6, helps firefighters rescue kitten from storm drain in Pennsylvania

TORONTO – A six-year-old girl was the hero of the day in a small south-central Pennsylvania town after she was lowered by firefighters into a storm drain to rescue a kitten.

Lancaster Township firefighters responded to reports of a trapped kitten Tuesday afternoon after Janeysha Cruz, 6, and her friends discovered the trapped animal, according to local NBC-affiliate WDTN.

Firefighters quickly realized no adults would be able to reach the kitten that was stuck nearly one metre down the small hole.

With permission from Cruz’s mother, firefighters lowered the kindergartner down the drain where she was able to coax the kitten into her arms before handing it to firefighters.

“I thought the kitten was going to bite me,” Cruz told NBC. “But I picked it up softly and gave it to firefighters.”

Deputy Fire Chief Glenn Usdin told LancasterOnline the heroic six-year-old was “as proud and happy as can be.”

“We put as much emphasis on saving and helping animals as we do people,” Usdin said. “Ducklings from storm drains, cats in trees — we’re all animal lovers.”
