Pointe-Claire garbage collection reduced to once every two weeks

WATCH: Residents in Pointe-Claire are fuming and so is their garbage. Removal has been reduced to once every two weeks and while some see the move as an extra incentive to go green, others say the smell is just too much. Elysia Bryan Baynes has more.

POINTE-CLAIRE- Household garbage collection in Pointe-Claire has been reduced to once every two weeks.

The city made the move to encourage residents to compost and recycle more.

But the decision is being met with resistance by some people.

“We recycle and compost but we also have a child in diapers and a dog,” Pointe-Claire resident Christine Archambault told Global News.

Archambault says the smell got so bad that her husband got sick on their driveway.

They’re worried about what that the reduced pickup will mean during the summer months.

“We don’t know where to put our garbage. Neighbours say they won’t put it in their garage beacause they’re worried about maggots and mice going after the trash.”

A petition has been started to get garbage pickup back to once a week.

The city’s mayor, Morris Trudeau says residents should avoid putting their garbage in the sun.

And he suggests padding garbage bins with newspaper to trap liquids.

“This way we’re recycling and putting less waste in the ground, ” Trudeau explains.

Residents will take their concerns to Pointe-Claire’s next city council meeting June 2.
