WATCH: Relaxed, hands-free driver raises eyebrows on Highway 1

VANCOUVER – A driver’s behaviour, caught on video on Highway 1, is raising some eyebrows.

The man was seen driving a convertible with both hands behind his head near Chilliwack on May 20. The person who took the video, from the passenger seat in the car beside him, said they had just passed the exits to Chilliwack, travelling eastbound.

“He drove for at least 10 to 15 minutes like this, way longer than we expected,” said the Global BC viewer, who does not want to be named.

“We thought he might just stretch for a quick second then at least put one hand back on the wheel.”

She said they were “absolutely shocked” to see him driving like that. “It’s crazy and unsafe to begin with, never mind when [you’re] travelling at highway speeds with lots of traffic and semis travelling alongside you,” she added.

RCMP are now looking into the video and say the driver could face a big fine of $368 and penalty points if caught.

Cpl. Ronda Rempel of  BC RCMP Traffic Services said “this is sadly another example of high-risk driving behaviour.”

“I think some people don’t understand that the public aren’t going to be tolerating this type of behaviour anymore and they are going to be reporting these types of videos to the police.”

“What is excellent in this case, is that the video actually shows the licence plate of the vehicle,” added Rempel. “So I’ve been able to query the licence plate and that information [has] been forwarded on to Fraser Valley Traffic Services and they’re going to be following up with the registered owner and trying to find the driver.”

In early May, a woman was caught on video driving down the Vancouver Island Highway while curling her hair.
