SASKATOON – Warm weather means garage sales are in full swing in Saskatoon. If you are having a garage sale, there are some city bylaws to remember.

Garage sales can take place on any site in a residential or industrial district with the following parameters:

  • Sales on residential sites are held by a resident of the dwelling;
  • By a non-profit group associated with a place of worship;
  • Public school;
  • Community association; and
  • Other similar groups or organizations.

No more than four garage sales can take place at one site during the calendar year, and no one sale can last for more than three consecutive days.

A permit or licence is not needed to hold a garage sale.

Retail sales of new articles are prohibited.

The best way many people advertise garage sales is through signs, but it must follow the temporary sign bylaw. People not following the bylaw could face a fine and the city will remove illegal signs.

So what are the bylaws?

The sign can have a face area of .06 square metres – approximately two feet by three feet.

There can be no more than two sign faces.

The top can be no higher than one metre above ground level.

Signs must be self-supporting. They cannot be attached to any city property including street light poles, traffic signal poles and fences.

Signs can only be put up at the beginning of the sale and must be removed immediately following the sale.

What signs are prohibited?

Balloon signs or other inflatable devices, electronic message boards, kites and portable signs.

Signs that resemble any traffic control device are not allowed.

Where can I place those signs?

Signs that meet the requirements can be placed on city right-of-ways as long as they follow the setback requirements:
