TORONTO – The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a man was fatally shot by police Wednesday afternoon at a Guelph, Ont. hospital following an “interaction” with officers.
At around 1:30 p.m. two Guelph police officers encountered a man Guelph General Hospital when there was an interaction between the officers and the man before the officers discharged their firearms, according to an SIU release.
The police watchdog agency said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the hospital, the shooting occurred in the waiting room of the emergency department.
“Our ED remains open although wait times will be longer than usual,” said Marianne Walker, President and CEO, in a statement “Our focus now is to provide support to all those who need it including staff, patients and visitors.”
A couple who was outside the hospital said they saw a woman partly covered in blood following the shooting.
“I heard gunshots and saw a woman with blood on her hands,” said Eric Brown.

Police will not comment if a woman was involved in the shooting or the identity of the man who was killed.
For Brown and Morton, the incident has put them on edge as the couple are both new parents following the birth of a baby boy.
“He is just 48 hours old,” said Morton.
The SIU has six investigators and four forensic investigators on the case.
The SIU is an arms-length agency which investigates situations involving police when death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault occur.
