Pilot dies after RCMP helicopter goes down in B.C.’s Fraser Valley

VANCOUVER – A pilot has died after an RCMP helicopter crashed east of Cultus Lake, B.C. Tuesday afternoon.

RCMP Chief Supt. Wayne Rideout confirmed that the pilot, a civilian member of the RCMP, had just completed a training exercise and was preparing to return to base when the helicopter crashed. The pilot was the only one on board, and had been with the RCMP for several years.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) confirmed the pilot died shortly after the crash. Bill Yearwood from the TSB said two Transportation Safety Board investigators are assisting the RCMP with the investigation.

It is too early to say if weather or what other potential factors could have played a role in the crash, added Yearwood.

Rideout said the pilot’s name will not be released at this time.
