CALGARY – One woman was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after a fiery crash in the city’s northeast on Tuesday.

It happened in the intersection of McKnight Boulevard and Barlow Trail N.E. around 12:30 a.m.

The driver of a truck crashed into a light standard, causing her vehicle to burst into flames as she remained trapped inside.

Police were able to put out the fire with an extinguisher and the driver was extricated from her truck by firefighters.

The driver, a woman in her 20s, was rushed to the Foothills Medical Centre with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Police say alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash.

The turning lane from westbound McKnight Boulevard onto southbound Barlow Trail was expected to be closed until Tuesday afternoon for repairs to the scene.
