Video shows SUV narrowly missing kids boarding school bus

WATCH ABOVE: A group of school kids were nearly run down by a speeding SUV as they boarded their school bus – and the terrifying incident was caught on camera. Elisa Hahn reports.

Three kids were nearly run down last Friday by an SUV straddling the shoulder of a country road to pass a school bus.

It was shortly before 7:30 a.m. on a country road near Graham, Washington when the bus stopped to pick up the kids. Its lights were on, the doors open, and the stop sign extended. But the car didn’t stop.

“I looked up and the car passed by the kids and my heart almost dropped,” Lisa Razo, the mother of one of the children told NBC News.

Razo’s five-year-old daughter Charity says she “felt the wind” as the car grazed her. Charity and the two other children can be seen jumping out of the way as the SUV passed them at nearly 80 kilometres an hour.

At least three security cameras mounted on the bus captured the SUV passing the bus on the right side, nearly in the ditch, as the three kids stepped towards the open door.

The SUV didn’t stop – or even slow down –as the kids jumped out of the way.

“‘Those are our kids! You stop! You stop!’ and I probably said some things I shouldn’t have said, and thank goodness children couldn’t hear. But I was scared and knew they weren’t stopping,” Brandy Wheeler, the mother of the other children, told NBC.

Razo said she thinks the driver may have been texting, was late for work, or didn’t see the bus stopping and was forced to swerve around it.

Police are still looking for the driver of what’s believed to be a white GMC Jimmy with a sunroof and tinted windows.
