MUHC move: Royal Vic birthing centre to move to superhospital on Sunday

MONTREAL — Dawn Lundrigran is more than 34 weeks into her pregnancy who is expecting twins at the Royal Victoria Hospital Birthing Centre.

Depending on the breaks, she could deliver at the 122-year-old chateau-like facility, or six kilometres away at the brand new hospital at the Glen Site.

She’s one of the roughly 200 patients caught in the midst of the Royal Vic’s transfer to the McGill University Health Centre’s superhospital.

“With twin pregnancies, it can happen at any time,” she told Global News.

With operating rooms outfitted with the latest technology and a move date slated for Sunday, officials are optimistic it will go smoothly.

“As we move patients over here we will be moving equipment as well,” said Helen Doulos, an assistant nurse manager with the MUHC.

There are more than a dozen expecting moms and newborn children that will have to move Sunday. But it’s a been a long transition.

“Some days are really exciting because we’re going to this new wonderful place,” said Luisa Ciofani, a clinical nurse specialist at the MUHC.

“Some days — wow, we’ve been walking into this place for so many years.”

The MUHC hopes that the transition to this new state-of-the-art facility goes smoothly.

The Royal Vic sits atop Mount Royal Park like a chateau from a bygone era and the hospital still evokes an emotional connection with patients.

“When I found out I was due the week it was closing, I was praying that I would deliver here,” said Amber Woodford, who just gave birth to a girl at the hospital.

“It’s kind of sentimental to me.”
