NDP incumbent holds considerable lead in Edmonton constituency: poll

EDMONTON — One of many polls being released as Alberta moves closer to the May 5 election shows an NDP incumbent holds a large lead over a former city councillor in a north Edmonton constituency.

NDP incumbent Deron Bilous leads 42 per cent to 21 per cent among all voters over PC candidate and Edmonton city councillor Tony Caterina in the constituency of Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview, according to the Mainstreet Technologies poll.

The poll also shows Bilous has a 50 per cent to 25 per cent lead over Caterina among decided voters who were asked who they would vote for if the provincial election were held tomorrow.

The lead is even large for Bilous in the age range of 50-64, where 60 per cent said they will vote for the NDP candidate, compared to to 11 per cent who said they would vote for the PC candidate.

The pollster cautions there are still two weeks left in the election race.

“There is a long way to go,” said David Valentin, Vice-President of Mainstreet Technologies.

“Councillor Caterina should not be counted out — a strong local machine can make a big difference if the provincial numbers tighten. He will need them to do so.”

Mainstreet Technologies says its polls carry a margin 4.86 per cent 19 times out of 20.
