WINNIPEG — Chandler, a one and half year old Russian Blue, has won the City’s title of Winnipeg’s #1 cat.

Chandler was entered by his owners, sisters Amy and Amanda Palmquist into the contest, beating out 59 other entrants.

The grey cat with green eyes was rescued from his owners from a farm, when he was the size of a teacup, said Amy Palmquist.

Along with a photo, each cat owner who entered was asked to submit a story about why their cat was a fan of responsible ownership and what makes them a good feline member of the community.

The Palmquist’s used Chandler’s sneaky nature to show how cat licensing benefits them in his story.

“Chandler is a true fan of responsible pet ownership because he wants to feel safe. He knows that we love him more than anything but he is a sneaky fellow,” read their entry. “He likes to play a game with us called ‘try to sneak out of the house door without the humans knowing.’ It’s rare that he actually wins at that game, but we bought him a license so if he were to ever get out and wander away from home, he will be returned back home safe and sound.”

Along with the title of Winnipeg’s #1 cat and a trophy, the winner will receive a free lifetime cat license.

Each cat was also required to be licensed in order to enter.

“When it comes to me and Chandler, it’s the licensing that gives you peace of mind, because he does like to attempt to run away,” said Palmquist. “Whatever chances I can give to the cat for it to be returned to me— I’ll take it.”

Leland Gordon, chief operating officer for the City’s Animal Services Agency, presented Chandler the award, which was a glass trophy and a license tag that says “001.”

He said it’s important for people to realize that there are many services included with a cat and dog license and they’re pleased with the response to the contest.

“They’re all #1 one cats in our hearts. This is just a fun, warm and fuzzy contest. We’re grateful to the community for stepping up for this,” said Gordon, who encourages people to check out the contest’s Facebook page to see the cats and their stories.
