MONTREAL — Quebec nurses are thinking about leaving in droves rather than facing the reality of Quebec’s proposed pension plan cuts.
A survey conducted by the provincial nurses’ union revealed that most of those nursers who were close to retirement age weren’t willing to take the risk of staying and being penalized.
- 61% of nurses over 50 are worried that the retirement age will rise from 60 to 62 years of age
- 71% are worried that the financial penalty for taking early retirement will jump from 4% to 7.2%
- 64% will consider retiring early since their pensions will be based on the best eight years instead of the best five years of service

Roberto Bomba of the Quebec Federation of Nurses told Global News that some of these nurses have already reached out to administrators to get the ball rolling.
“The risk is very clear,” Bomba said.
“We could see 7,500 nurses leaving in the next few years.”
“The numbers speak for themselves. Nobody wants to lose $9200 per year to keep working a few extra years.”
