Victoria’s Jamie Benn wins Art Ross Trophy

A B.C. boy has won the NHL scoring championship.

The Dallas’ Stars Jamie Benn scored four points in his final game of the year to leap over Sidney Crosby and John Tavares to win the Art Ross Trophy.

Benn, who was born in Victoria and played minor hockey for the Victoria Grizzlies, scored three goals and an assist against the Nashville Predators, to finish with 87 points – 35 goals and 52 assists.

Two of his points came in the final three minutes of the game, including an assist with nine seconds left to take the scoring lead.

Tavares, who also scored two points on the night for the New York Islanders, finished with 86 points, while Crosby was held off the scoresheet in his game, and finished with 84.

The Art Ross Trophy has been given out every season since 1947-1948 to the NHL player with the points in the regular season. Benn’s victory marks the first time a British Columbian has won the award.
