HALIFAX – The salaries of Nova Scotia politicians would be frozen for three years under legislation introduced today by the provincial government.
Finance Minister Diana Whalen says the wage freeze would also extend to about 1,800 non-unionized employees including senior managers, secretaries and political staff.
Whalen says the government expects to save $2.5 million a year with that measure.
She says the amendments to the House of Assembly Act would also eliminate transitional pay to legislature members who are eligible for full pensions.
Under the current formula, the maximum payout in transitional pay is $89,000.
The changes come ahead of what’s expected to be an austerity budget to be released Thursday.
