EDMONTON — An explosives team detonated a charge near a suspicious package near a Save On Foods in St. Albert Monday as a precaution.
The RCMP said the package was not a threat and the area was deemed safe.
An area around the grocery store was cordoned off and an explosives team was called in to investigate after police received a report of a suspicious package 9:30 a.m. Monday. The package was found near the Save On Foods store at the north end of St. Albert Trail.
The RCMP cordoned off the area after arriving at the scene Monday morning.
Early Monday afternoon, police said the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit had deployed a robot to examine the package and asked the public to stay back from the area while the investigation continued.
Shortly after 3 p.m., the RCMP said the package did not contain any explosives. No one was hurt but the RCMP would like to speak to the person they believe knows what led to the situation.
A man, seen on security video, appears to have short, red hair, a goatee and moustache, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark ball cap and is in his early 40s.
