Petition drive to save Dorval Municipal Golf Course

DORVAL — A petition is set to launch next week aimed at pressuring Ottawa to save the nine-hole Dorval Municipal Golf Course.

Recently, on the course’s Facebook page, news of the petition surfaced with a stated aim of gathering 10,000 signatures and sending it to Ottawa sometime in May.

“Don’t let them take away this little gem!” wrote Heather Wares.

Joan LeVasseur agreed: “We haven’t even heard exactly why they want to use our beautiful club. Let’s mobilize!”

Aeroports de Montreal (ADM) manages the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport and owns the land the course is on.

Dorval officials announced in January that ADM wasn’t renewing the club’s lease after it had been operating for decades.

Part of the closure involves the airport expanding onto the course, but details are not completely clear.

There is a possibility part of the expansion could incorporate a light rail line that may involve the long-awaited train de l’ouest and a downtown airport rail link.

“It’ll be trains, planes and automobiles and more trucks [if expansion occurs],” said course manager Glenn Barrette, who has worked there for more than 25 years.

“I try not to think about it too much. It’s upsetting. For everybody.”

The ADM and the city of Dorval did not respond to calls seeking comment Friday, which is a holiday.

Dorval residents who spoke to Global News seemed hopeful the course could be saved – but doubtful that it would be.

“They [the ADM] do what they want to do,” said one Dorval resident.

If asked if a petition could change that, she simply replied “I doubt it.”
