Winnipeggers find ways to tackle online distractions

WINNIPEG — Electronic distractions are all around us, and many people admit they keep us from focusing on one task.

Some say it’s multitasking, but a study out of the University of Chicago looks at how it could be a bigger problem. Some of the research shows that being constantly distracted by electronic devices and being unable to focus as a result mimics the symptoms of ADHD. A Winnipeg tech expert said there are ways you can go about limiting the distractions, starting with seeing fewer ads.

“There are ad blockers that you can install on your browsers so they strip out the ads all together, that’s one way of doing it,” said Kevin Hnatiuk at New Media Manitoba. “The other way of doing it is being more disciplined, like creating a task list and saying I am going to intentionally go on the internet to complete this specific task.”

Winnipeggers said some of the ways they battle online distractions include turning their cell phone off, muting it, or writing out a to-do list for the week.

“It’s hard because we are kind of in uncharted territory right now,” said Hnatiuk. “We don’t want to block these things out completely, I think there’s room for both.”
