TORONTO – A historic University of Toronto building was vandalized overnight, as students and staff awoke Friday to find “Shame” spray-painted over the doors and front façade.
Simcoe Hall houses the president’s office. Built in 1924, it’s named after John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada.
Police taped off the entrance to Simcoe Hall in the morning and crews began cleaning the spraypaint off the building later in the afternoon.
The university is embroiled in a labour disruption as teaching assistants, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 3902, have been on strike for nearly two weeks.
The union members are expected to vote on a tentative agreement Friday.
