FREDERICTON – Two District Education Councils have voted to close three New Brunswick schools and consolidate two others.

The councils voted Wednesday evening to close Lorne Middle School, Pennfield Elementary School in Anglophone South and Coles Island School in Anglophone West.

Their recommendations under Policy 409 go to Education Minister Serge Rousselle, who has up to 60 days to make a decision on the closures.

Many parents are angry about the decisions.

“Pound for pound, Lorne punches higher than any other school in the district and instead of looking at ways of keeping Lorne open and increasing the student population, the DEC took the easy decision of recommending closing it,” said Ken Craft of the Lorne Parent School Support Committee.

Anglophone West’s District Education Council has also voted to consolidate Stanley High and Stanley Elementary. The two schools already operate under the same roof, but council has recommended to merge the two schools’ administration.

The same is being considered for Dalhousie Regional High and Dalhousie Middle Schools in Anglophone North School District.
