Moncton program offers fresh, healthy food to those in need

MONCTON – Greater Moncton residents are taking advantage of an affordable food program for people who don’t always have access to fresh, healthy food.

The program is called “It’s Good!” and available for anyone in need. It’s managed by Breelove Counselling and Consulting, who sell bags full of food for $20 and baskets for $30.

“We had the idea of doing the program and we were communicating with Co-op Atlantic and they were willing to partner-up with us and that was really the best part of it because we were able to get wholesale foods at an affordable price,” said Veronic Comeau, who speaks for the service.

“This way we promote accessibility of fresh foods to everyone in the community.”

She said they wanted to create an inclusive service that encourages eating healthy food. The bags and baskets are full of fresh fruits and vegetables.

“Its open to everyone and we’re really inclusive,” she said. “It’s offered twice a month and it’s very affordable.”

Volunteers, like Diane Leblanc, say people deserve access to fresh food.

“If you look at what’s in our bags and box all fresh vegetables and fruit and that’s what people should be eating,” she said.

Health Canada says healthy food and active living can help reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Kathy Belliveau is one of the clients who buys food from the program.

“There are some people who can’t go out and this way it’s delivered they can get the proper food that they need,” she said.
