EDMONTON — A RCMP cruiser was rammed and a Mountie forced to fire their gun after a traffic stop went awry this weekend in Parkland County.

It all started just after 3 p.m. on Sunday on Highway 16 near Stony Plain, where an Alberta Traffic Sheriff attempted to pull over a vehicle for a traffic violation. RCMP said the sheriff was standing on the side of the road, when the person at the wheel drove at the sheriff before speeding off.

RCMP were called to help, and found the vehicle a few minutes later in nearby Spruce Grove. While Mounties attempted to pull it over, the fleeing suspect vehicle rammed an occupied RCMP cruiser. Police said an officer then fired their gun and the vehicle stopped.

A 22-year-old man from the Grande Prairie region was arrested.  He was also wanted on several unrelated arrest warrants. No one was injured during the incident.

Later Monday, Andrew Pike was charged with dangerous driving, flight from police, two counts of assaulting a police officer, two counts of assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and two counts of failing to comply with a condition of recognizance.

Because no one was injured by the firearm discharge, Alberta Justice and Solicitor General determined the investigation into the events will remain with the RCMP.  However the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will review the findings regarding the gun being fired.

Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP and the RCMP Major Crimes unit in Edmonton continue to investigate.
