Suspect tried to run over police officer during dangerous pursuit: Spruce Grove RCMP

File / Global News

EDMONTON – The RCMP is searching for a driver who created havoc in Spruce Grove Saturday during a wild chase with police.

An RCMP officer was passed by a truck travelling 150 km/h on Whitemud Drive in west Edmonton. The truck was then seen running red lights and failing to stop at stop signs.

The RCMP tried to stop the vehicle just south of Spruce Grove, where a police officer was standing on the side of a road, ready to deploy a spike bike. However, RCMP say the officer was forced to jump into the ditch to avoid being run down by the truck.

Police say the licence plate and the truck were stolen.

Police received a report of a man at an apartment on Calahoo Road, where he allegedly entered an unlocked suite when nobody was home. When the residents returned, the man jumped out from behind a child’s laundry hamper and fled the building. Police believe this may have been the suspect involved in the chase.

A K9 Unit was called but was not successful in tracking the suspect.

Police do not have a good description of the suspect, only that he is a man and may have been wearing a balaclava during part of the incident.
