EDMONTON — Former Edmonton Eskimo Rob Brown has been named the city’s top cop for 2014.
Const. Brown received the award from the Kiwanis Club of Edmonton Oil Capital saving the Eastglen High School Blue Devils football team from the brink of extinction.
Brown spent 10 years in the CFL, splitting time between the Eskimos and Montreal Alouettes. He moved back to Edmonton after retiring from the league and became a member of the Edmonton Police Service in 2009.
After taking on the role as a School Resource Officer at Eastglen in 2013, Brown became an assistant coach with the football team.
With the team struggling financially and with poor equipment, the program was close to being cut. So Brown used his alumni connections in the CFL to help. His efforts led to Nissan Canada providing funding for new uniforms and equipment, as well as renovating the team’s locker room.
The head coach of the football team says Brown’s efforts to revive the football program has made a positive impact not only on the team, but the entire school.
The award has been handed out for the past 39 years to an Edmonton police officer in recognition of their volunteer work.
